Peril is an adult female SkyWing and is the main protagonist of Escaping Peril. She currently attends Jade Mountain Academy as a student. Peril hatched with a rare condition known as firescales: everything she touches is set ablaze. The only other dragons she can safely touch are Clay, because of his fire-resistant scales, and Darkstalker, because of his invulnerable scales.
Life
Peril was born to Soar and Kestrel.[1] She hatched as a twin with her brother Sky. She was born with too much fire, and her brother had too little.[2] Queen Scarlet ordered Kestrel to kill the two dragonets.[3] However, Kestrel tried to escape with them. Scarlet had caught up to them, and said that she would forgive Kestrel on one condition. She had to kill one of her dragonets for the queens' forgiveness. Kestrel chose to kill Peril's brother, but Scarlet changed her mind again. She ordered her guards to kill the other dragonet. Kestrel tried to flee with Peril, but Peril's firescales burned Kestrel. Kestrel was forced to drop Peril and leave her behind. Scarlet took Peril under her wing, and made her into her new champion.
One year later, during the brightest night, Queen Scarlet introduced Peril as her champion to her SkyWing subjects. Scarlet had planned to kill all the SkyWing eggs, to make sure that the dragonet prophecy would not commence.[4] She made Peril burn all the eggs in front of the entire SkyWing court.
During the next seven years of her life, Peril lived as Queen Scarlet's champion. She fought the prisoners in Scarlet's arena. Prisoners were to be freed if they won enough battles, but for their last battle, Peril was their opponent. No prisoner survived Peril's firescales.
