An Image of a NightWing From A NightWing Guide to The Dragons of Pyrrhia

NightWings are one of the seven tribes living in Pyrrhia. Prior to the events of Darkstalker, they lived in the southwest on the "talon" of Pyrrhia, but fled to a volcanic island off the coast of the Sky Kingdom during and after the events of the book.[citation needed] After the volcanic island erupted at the end of The Dark Secret, they were forced to flee to the Rainforest, after which their current queen became Queen Glory.[1] Most NightWings dislike her because she is a RainWing. In A Guide to the Dragon World, some NightWings founded Renewal. It is located on the Talon Peninsula where NightWings used to reside before moving to the volcano.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Fatespeaker with teardrop scales, The Dark Secret: Graphic Novel 4

NightWings typically have purplish-black scales,[1] but may sometimes have shades of dark blues, greens,[2] and dark grays. They have silver scales scattered under their wings,[1] which helps them hide in the night sky. It is theorized by Mastermind that these patterns are genetic.[3] To camouflage themselves further, NightWings have strands of star scales running along their neck, and tail.

They typically have straight horns, though they can also sometimes be twisted.[4] Their tongues are forked and black.[5] Small spikes run down their head to their tail. Their underbelly usually is a light gray or purple depending on their main body coloring.

NightWings born with the power to read minds have a silver teardrop beside their eyes.[6] This might also be a trait of empaths, like Fatespeaker, as she had these scales as well. Their eye color can be silver, black, dark blue, dark green, or purple.

Abilities[edit | edit source]

NightWings can breathe fire and, because of their dark scales and stars on their wings, can hide in the night sky and in shadows.[1] When a NightWing egg hatches below the light of one full moon, the dragonet gets either mind reading or the ability to see the future.[7] Dragonets hatched below two full moons get both powers,[7] and those born below all the full moons have their powers enhanced.[8] Most NightWing eggs are black, but ones that hatch under full moons turn silver[9]. NightWings have the potential to have animus magic, branching from the royal IceWing bloodline;[citation needed] however, their last known animus is Stonemover.

Culture[edit | edit source]

Legends: Darkstalker[edit | edit source]

When NightWings are born, they are named by their mother. This is shown when Foeslayer is arguing with Arctic over what to name Darkstalker.[10]

NightWings, in Darkstalker's time, slept during the daylight hours, and woke when the moon was out.[citation needed] After the events of Darkstalker, they changed their sleep schedule to a diurnal one, matching the rest of the Pyrrhian tribes.[citation needed]

NightWings used to have grand palaces in Darkstalker's time.[citation needed] The Night Kingdom was built into great ravines and caverns, and social status was often determined by where one's home was in these canyons.[citation needed] NightWings of a greater status would live higher up to be closer to the moon, as it "fuels their power."[citation needed] It is undetermined whether this is true. Lower class citizens lived towards the bottom, which was not as desirable.[citation needed]

NightWings during this time were great philosophers, architects, and artists.[citation needed] They had extensive libraries, great halls of knowledge, and thousands of scrolls. The first NightWing librarians were honored. The NightWings were also social, and it was commented multiple times in the books how their society ran on other visiting tribes.

NightWings had the grandest schools in all of Pyrrhia, with beautiful courtyards and gracefully designed pillars.[citation needed]

NightWings also had grand festivals. To celebrate Queen Vigilance's 40th year ruling the NightWings, she had a Glass Jubilee, where she hired the best musicians, held feasts, and held the titular glass sculpture contest.[citation needed] The festivals usually had games, and other forms of amusement for the guests. They were very popular, and almost the whole tribe would join in on the celebration.
