Peril is a female SkyWing and the protagonist of Escaping Peril. She hatched with a rare condition known as firescales, which causes anything flammable she touches to ignite. Because of her condition, she was made to fight in Queen Scarlet's arena. She currently attends Jade Mountain Academy and is in the Jade Winglet.

Peril is known for her fierceness and impulsive nature. She struggles with feelings of rejection and isolation due to her uncontrollable fire scales and the way she has been used as a tool by her adoptive mother, Queen Scarlet. Despite this, Peril is loyal, particularly to those she cares about, and is deeply committed to proving her worth. She is brave and will do anything to protect her friends. Though she wrestles with her temper and tendency to act before thinking, Peril learns to harness her power and becomes a more controlled and strategic character over time.

Despite her exterior, Peril is kind-hearted, often showing moments of vulnerability and seeking acceptance. She is deeply impacted by her past, learning to trust herself and others more fully. Peril's journey involves finding her identity and learning to use her strength for good rather than destruction. Throughout the series, she is seen as an independent character who, despite her rough edges, wants to do the right thing most of the time.

Description

Peril has bright, glowing copper-colored scales that emit smoke and heat. On her scales she has slight stripes of gold along the edges of her scales. She has faint gold veins on her wings, and her eyes are a fierce shade of blue. She has sharp claws, good for arena combat.

Life

She was born to Soar (Chameleon) and Kestrel. Peril was hatched as a twin with her presumed brother Sky. She was born with too much fire, and her brother had too little. Then-Queen Scarlet ordered Kestrel to kill the two dragonets. However, Kestrel tried to escape with them. Scarlet had caught up to them, and said that she would forgive Kestrel on one condition. She had to kill one of her dragonets for the queens' forgiveness. Kestrel chose to kill Peril's brother, but Scarlet changed her mind again and ordered her guards to kill Peril. Kestrel attempted to flee with Peril, but Peril's firescales burned Kestrel. Kestrel was forced to drop Peril and leave her behind. Scarlet took Peril under her wing, and made her into her new champion.

One year later, Queen Scarlet introduced Peril as her champion for her SkyWings subjects during the brightest night. Scarlet had planned to kill all the SkyWing eggs, to make sure that the dragonet prophecy would not commence. She made Peril burn all the eggs in front of the entire SkyWing court.

During the next seven years of her life, Peril lived as Queen Scarlet's champion. She fought prisoners in Scarlet's arena. Prisoners were to be freed if they won enough battles, but for their last battle, Peril was their opponent. No prisoner survived Perils firescales.
