An Image of a SandWing from A Guide to the Dragons of Phyrria

SandWings are one of the seven tribes living on Pyrrhia. They live in the Kingdom of Sand located south-west of the center of Pyrrhia, on the "chest" of the continent. They are currently ruled by Queen Thorn.[1] In the 20 years before Thorn's initial reign, the SandWings had a succession crisis upon the death of Queen Oasis, which ultimately caused the War of SandWing Succession. During that time, the SandWings did not have an official queen. They are characterized by their ability to go for weeks without water and days without food, their venomous tail barb, and ability to blend into sand.[2]

Appearance[edit | edit source]

SandWing scales are the color of desert sand, typically being a pale gold or white.[2] They have also been known to have scales with shades of pale yellow,[3] white-gold,[4] and light brown.[5] Their scales and wings can also sometimes have patterns of darker colors such as brown or black, like Blister's diamond scale pattern and Jerboa's brown triangle pattern on her wings.[4][6] They can also have freckles, as seen with Qibli.[7] Their eyes are black.[8]

SandWings are slim dragons with short horns that curve vaguely upward. They have a spike on the tip of their snout and on either sides of their cheeks. They have a large, wavy sail on their back that starts at their snout and ends at their tail. Their tail curls at the end, and at the tip there is a venomous scorpion-like barb. They have forked black tongues, like NightWings.[2]

Abilities[edit | edit source]

Like some other Pyrrhian tribes, SandWings are able to breathe fire, it is commented that SandWings breathe the hottest fire.[citation needed] They have a sharp, scorpion-like tail barb capable of injecting venom into a victim stabbed with it. The speed of death depends on how close to the heart the poisoned wound is.[citation needed] After a few days, dragons that have been hit will start to notice blackening of the wound,[9] and extreme pain.[citation needed] The only antidote to SandWing venom is brightsting cactus. SandWings gain venom in their tail at around three years of age,[10] but the barb has to fully grow first,[11] which presumably happens around or before the production of venom. SandWings are able to go for a long time without water and are built for long flights and little food.[12] They emit a natural aura of heat, similar to IceWings radiating cold.[13]

SandWings have animus dragons, with the only living one being Jerboa III, however, she rid Pyrrhia of current animus magic, so she neither has the ability to use her magic, or to counter her own spell. The only other animus SandWing is Jerboa, though, Jerboa III froze her in ice.[citation needed]
