Peril is an adult female SkyWing and is the main protagonist of Escaping Peril. She currently attends Jade Mountain Academy as a student. Peril hatched with a rare condition known as firescales: everything she touches is set ablaze. The only other dragons she can safely touch are Clay, because of his fire-resistant scales, and Darkstalker, because of his invulnerable scales.

Because of her condition, she was to be the Champion of Queen Scarlet. She currently attends Jade Mountain Academy and is in the Jade Winglet.

Description[edit | edit source]

Peril has bright, glowing copper-colored scales that emit smoke and heat.[1] On her scales, she has slight stripes of gold along the edges of her scales. She has faint gold veins on her wings, and her eyes are a fierce shade of blue.[2][3] She has sharp white teeth and sharp claws.[4]

Peril's scales are extremely hot and can burn or set fire to nearby surfaces.[5]

Personality[edit | edit source]

Peril is known for her fierceness and impulsive nature. She struggles with feelings of rejection and isolation due to her uncontrollable fire scales and the way she has been used as a tool by her adoptive mother, Queen Scarlet.[6][7] Despite this, Peril is loyal, particularly to those she cares about, and is deeply committed to proving her worth. She is brave and will do anything to protect her friends. Though she wrestles with her temper and tendency to act before thinking, Peril learns to harness her power and becomes a more controlled and strategic character over time.

Despite her exterior, Peril is kind-hearted, often showing moments of vulnerability and seeking acceptance. She is deeply impacted by her past, learning to trust herself and others more fully. Peril's journey involves finding her identity and learning to use her strength for good rather than destruction. Throughout the series, she is seen as an independent character who, despite her rough edges, wants to do the right thing most of the time.

Life[edit | edit source]

She was born to Chameleon and Kestrel.[8] Peril was hatched as a twin with her presumed brother Sky. She was born with too much fire, and her brother had too little. Then-Queen Scarlet ordered Kestrel to kill the two dragonets. However, Kestrel tried to escape with them. Scarlet had caught up to them and said that she would forgive Kestrel on one condition. She had to kill one of her dragonets for the queen's forgiveness. Kestrel chose to kill Peril's brother, but Scarlet changed her mind again and ordered her guards to kill Peril. Kestrel attempted to flee with Peril, but Peril's firescales burned Kestrel. Kestrel was forced to drop Peril and leave her behind. Scarlet took Peril under her wing, and made her into her new champion, telling her that her mother had died.[9]

One year later, Queen Scarlet introduced Peril as her champion for her SkyWings subjects during the brightest night. Scarlet had planned to kill all the SkyWing eggs, to make sure that the dragonet prophecy would not commence. She made Peril burn all the eggs in front of the entire SkyWing court.[10]

During the next seven years of her life, Peril lived as Queen Scarlet's champion. She fought prisoners in Scarlet's arena. Prisoners were to be freed if they won enough battles, but for their last battle, Peril was their opponent. No prisoner survived Peril.[6]

Peril was friends with Osprey and she would often listen to his stories of the old days.[11]

While the Dragonets of Destiny were in capture by Scarlet, Peril met Clay, despite orders from Scarlet to not talk to him.[12] She also fought Horizon, who killed himself by jumping onto her scales. Two days later, Peril hid behind Clay to watch Kestrel's trial after Scarlet forbade her from doing so.[13] Upon discovering that Kestrel was her mother, she revealed herself and called upon the Champion's Shield to fight for Kestrel.

When Clay, Tsunami, and Starflight were moved to Peril's cave by Scarlet, Peril at first helped them escape, but then betrayed them and let Scarlet discover their attempted escape.[14]

The next day, Scarlet chose Clay as Peril's opponent for the battle of the Champion's Shield.[15] The battle was interrupted, and Peril freed Clay, Tsunami, and Sunny.[16][17][18] With the help of Clay and Tsunami, she also freed Kestrel.[19] She chose to stay in the Sky Kingdom instead of leaving with Kestrel or the Dragonets of Destiny.[20]
