Turtle is a male SeaWing dragonet prince who first appears in Moon Rising, and is later featured as the main protagonist of Talons of Power. He is one of the thirty-two sons of Queen Coral and King Gill. He is also one of the brothers of Orca, Tsunami, Anemone, Auklet, Octopus, Fin, and Cerulean. He and his sister, Anemone, are the only SeaWing animus dragons currently alive.

Description[edit | edit source]

Turtle has dark emerald-green scales, like an emerald hidden in a cave,[1] described as unblemished[2] and jewel-toned.[3] He has brighter green underscales,[1] and his dark green[4] eyes have hints of gold in them.[1] His glow-in-the-dark scales glow with a pale greenish light.[5] He has luminescent spirals and shapes like webbed talonprints along his wings, which are described as "sort of beautiful, in a weird fishy way," by Peril.[6]

He is a little plump, with a sweet extra curve to his snout and upper arms,[1] and huge[7] webbed talons.[1] He also has a round and anxious face,[5] and is placid and ordinary looking.[8] He wears a small waterproof pouch around his neck,[9] and his only other accessory is a kind of gold armband that was originally studded with six glittering and sparkly black skyfire stones, but has since been reduced to three, leaving empty holes where the other three used to be.[9] He closely resembles Fathom, according to Darkstalker.[10] He is said to have a low, rumbly voice.[11]

History[edit | edit source]

Turtle often felt neglected by Queen Coral. He discovered his animus powers accidentally, before the Talons of Power ceremony. When he finally attended the ceremony, he enchanted Anemone to give her animus powers.

Turtle is currently a student at Jade Mountain Academy.

"He looked about Moon's age, and he was dark green, like an emerald hidden in a cave, with flashes of brighter green underscales and hints of gold in his eyes. He was a little plump, with a sweet extra curve to his snout and upper arms, and his webbed talons were splayed out like he was worried that the wind would shove him off the mountain. Unlike Anemone and Auklet, he was not adorned with pearls and jewels; his only accessory was a kind of gold armband studded with glittering black rocks."
  2. Escaping Peril, chapter 8. "Finally he surfaced, spraying water out of his nose and looking extremely pleased with himself. Peril's eyes went straight to the spot where she'd burned him … but there was no scorch mark there anymore. His scales looked whole and unblemished all over, as if neither fire nor thorns had ever wounded him. She couldn't even figure out where the seedpods had been."
  3. Escaping Peril, chapter 7. "Turtle flapped wetly up beside her, splattering her with spray from his tail and wings. In the sunlight, his jewel-toned scales looked even more like emeralds than ever. "A plan would be good," he said. "Tell me your plan.""
  4. Moon Rising, chapter 15. "After a moment, she felt a wing gently brush her back. Even when he was touching her, she couldn't sense anything but fuzz from Turtle. He looked down at her with his dark green eyes."
  5. 5.0 5.1 Winter Turning, chapter 2. "Turtle's glow-in-the-dark scales flickered, illuminating his anxious face with pale greenish light. "But what if the mountain falls on me? Is it dangerous?""
  6. Escaping Peril, chapter 19. ""I left them in that valley," Turtle said, pointing. "They said to signal when I needed them." His scales begin flashing, and Peril nearly flew into a cliff, she was so startled. She knew that SeaWings had glow-in-the-dark scales, but she'd never seen a dragon use them at night before. Luminescent spirals and shapes like webbed talonprints lit up all along his wings. It was sort of beautiful, in a weird, fishy way."
  7. Winter Turning, chapter 2. ""Um," Turtle interjected. Winter shifted his gaze to the SeaWing, who had been quietly pacing in circles, splashing through the puddles with his huge talons. "Excuse me. What about the creepy prophecy? Is Jade Mountain in danger? Shouldn't we … you know, warn someone?""
  8. Moon Rising, chapter 1. "Turtle wasn't like Glory or those NightWings, though; his mind didn't feel like a thorny wall radiating I've got secrets, keep out. It was just … serenely still. How was he hiding his thoughts so absolutely? He looked so placid and ordinary."
  9. 9.0 9.1 Escaping Peril, chapter 7. "She sat on the boulder where she'd slept, watching Turtle splash around after his breakfast. He had a small waterproof pouch around his neck, which looked heavier than usual this morning. From the way it thumped against his chest, Peril guessed he'd put one of the river rocks in there. His only other accessory was a gold armband with three sparkly black rocks set in it, plus three holes where it seemed as though other rocks should have been."
  10. Talons of Power, chapter 22. ""It's all coming back to me," Darkstalker rumbled. "Turtle. Yes. Moon's friend. Fathom's descendant. You look exactly like him. I believe I had a whole plan for you, before you muddled it up by hiding like that." He tapped Turtle lightly on the nose. "Surprisingly clever, especially for you. I would never have guessed you had it in you.""
  11. Escaping Peril, chapter 1. ""Um," he said in a low, rumbly voice. "Walking? In the halls? Back to my cave?" He risked opening one eye to peer at her."
