Battlewinner was an adult female NightWing and former queen of the NightWings. She was hit by frostbreath from an IceWing in her throat and had to stay in lava to keep herself from freezing from the inside.
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Battlewinner had a thick neck, scarred snout, and smooth black scales that gleamed like polished ebony.[1] Her icicle-like teeth and dark eyes had glints of icy blue in them.[2] She spoke sparingly using few words and had a creaky, raspy voice.[3] The inside of Battlewinner's throat was lined with swirling patters of frost, as was her black tongue.[4][5]
Personality[edit | edit source]
Battlewinner did not like her orders questioned.[6]
Life[edit | edit source]
For nine years, Battlewinner kept herself hidden in the NightWing fortress behind a stone wall carved in the shape of a circle dotted with small holes no larger than a dragon's eye.[7][8] To communicate with others, Battlewinner would issue her commands to her daughter, Greatness, through the screen.[9] Battlewinner never spoke without Greatness.[10] Battlewinner stayed permanently in a cauldron of lava to stay alive.[11] An IceWing had blasted frost breath down her throat, freezing her from the inside.[12]
Battlewinner planned to wear a special lava-containing armor developed by Mastermind to allow her to move outside the cauldron.[13] On the night she planned to attack the RainWing village, she ordered Mastermind to assemble the armor so that she could lead the invasion rather than Greatness.[14] She was confronted by Glory, Greatness, Starflight, and Fatespeaker, where she attempted to leave the cauldron and attack Glory after they suggested that the NightWings move to the rainforest under the rule of Queen Glory. In a matter of seconds, she froze to death.[15]

- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 16, paragraph 3. "Its head and wings came first, in a fountain of golden molten lava, and then a set of claws shot out and clutched the side of the cauldron. The dragon shook itself, sending splatters of lava flying. Slowly the lava poured off her head, revealing a thickset neck, a battle- scarred snout, and black scales that gleamed like polished ebony against the orange-yellow pool around her."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 16, paragraph 7. "The dragon in the lava leaned forward and glared at them. Buzzing white steam seemed to be rising from her scales. Her tongue flicked in and out as she studied the two dragonets, and Starflight realized there was a glint of icy blue in the depths of her dark eyes. When she opened her mouth, he spotted two teeth that were the same shade of blue, looking more like icicles than regular teeth."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 16, paragraph 8. "“Who?” she rasped suddenly. Her voice was hard to hear — creaky and quiet and rough and eerie, like claws scraping on ice several caves away."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 16, paragraph 20. "“Three moons,” he said, his eyes widening. “Fatespeaker, look! You can see right down her throat … and it’s blue.” The walls of Battlewinner’s throat were lined with what looked like pale blue frost, small swirling patterns that were feathery or sharp and all glinted oddly."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 16, paragraph 27. "Battlewinner nodded, her heavy shoulders sliding up out of the lava and back down again. Her black tongue flicked in and out again, and this time he saw that it also had a layer of thin shimmering frost on it."
- ↑ The Hidden Kingdom, chapter 21, paragraph 56. "“Besides, Queen Battlewinner doesn’t like to have her orders questioned,” the fourth dragon spoke up. He stepped forward with something furry and horrible- smelling in his talons. “It’s feeding time now. You can go ask her if this one should go to the lab afterward.”"
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 2, paragraph 26. "There was a clear spot on the cave walls right across from him. It looked like a circle had been carved into the rock, as wide across as Starflight’s wingspan, and then jabbed full of small holes, none of them bigger than a dragon’s eye."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 6, paragraph 42. "“No, no,” said Mastermind. “Three moons, no. No one sees the queen. Not for the last nine years or so. She’s very private.”"
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 2, paragraph 86. "Princess, Starflight thought. So the diamond dragon — Greatness — speaks for her mother, for some reason."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 14, paragraph 80. "“Well,” Deathbringer said slowly, “if you really want to try the throne room — it’s on the far side of the fortress from here, two doors past the library if you’re coming from the council chamber. But even if she’s behind that screen in the middle of the night, which she won’t be, she won’t speak to you without Greatness there.”"
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 16, paragraph 35. "And instead it saved her life. Queen Battlewinner was alive now, but the frostbreath was still inside her. She could never leave the lava, or else it would finish its work."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 16, paragraph 28. "“You got blasted by an IceWing,” he said slowly. “You must have been on the continent when you … ran into one, is that it? And you fought, and it hit you, but not on the outside … maybe your mouth was open and it went right in and down your throat to freeze your insides. Which means you should have been dead within a day.”"
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 26, paragraph 39. "Lava, he realized. This is how Battlewinner plans to get to the rainforest. Mastermind has been building her a portable lava device. His brain immediately started taking apart the science of the idea. But how would it stay hot, away from the volcano? Can any metal really contain it? He also realized, tangentially, that his father had lied about not seeing the queen — he must be one of the few dragons who knew her secret, and was working to help her keep it."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 25, paragraph 47. "“Must do this right,” Battlewinner snarled. “Can’t trust you to invade properly.” She cast a scornful look at Greatness."
- ↑ The Dark Secret, chapter 25, paragraph 99. "With a bone-rattling shriek, Battlewinner threw off her daughter and Mastermind and surged toward Glory. Glory took a step back, and the NightWing queen collapsed on the floor in front of her. Her limbs twitched violently; her wings spasmed; her tail thrashed back and forth. White frost was starting to march between the scales of her neck, spreading rapidly across her body."
