An image of a MudWing from A Nightwing Guide to the Dragons of Pyrrhia

MudWings are one of the seven dragon tribes living on Pyrrhia. The MudWings inhabit the Mud Kingdom, an area with vast swamps and marshes which is located in eastern and central Pyrrhia and is also above the Rainforest Kingdom. The Tribe is currently ruled by Queen Moorhen.[1] During the War of SandWing Succession, the tribe was initially allied with Blister and the SeaWings, but after Commander Tempest was assassinated by Deathbringer, they became allied to Burn and the SkyWings. MudWings are often characterized by their physical strength and broad, flat snouts.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

MudWing scales range from shades of brown or amber.[2][3] [citation needed]Their underscales are typically lighter in color than their main scales, typically being shades of amber or gold.[4] Their dorsal scales are normally brown, amber, or hazel,[citation needed] and their irises are shades of brown, amber, or hazel.[4]

MudWings are large, strongly built dragons with thick, armored scales.[1] Their horns are gently curved, while their heads are uniquely large and flat. MudWings also have nostrils on the top of their snouts to aid in breathing while submerged underwater, and spines along their back that broaden on their tails. They also have thick plates of scales along their thighs, upper body, shoulders, and tail.[citation needed]

Abilities[edit | edit source]

MudWings are able to breathe fire if they are warm enough,[1] and hold their breath for up to an hour.[1]

On occasion, a clutch of MudWing eggs can contain a blood-red egg, in which case the dragonet inside will have fire-resistant scales.[5] They are not totally immune to fire, though, and still can be burned badly, but heal very quickly. Blood-red eggs are quite rare, and are often destroyed by their parents.[citation needed]

Mud provides healing qualities to MudWings.[6]

Diet[edit | edit source]

MudWings commonly eat animals such as crocodiles, water birds, hippos, water buffalo, cows, elephants, and other swamp-dwelling creatures.[4] MudWings may eat fruit, such as melons.[7] However, MudWings will eat most things they can get their claws on.[4]

It’s possible that MudWings have desserts and prepare other dishes, such as frozen cream with melon, and possibly other fruit,[7] as it is stated in A Guide to the Dragon World that frozen cream with melon is a rare MudWing delicacy.[7] They are also shown to breed livestock, such as cows.[8]

Culture[edit | edit source]

Sibling Troops[edit | edit source]

MudWings are typically grouped into troops at hatching that are made up of one's own brothers and sisters, sometimes referred to as their "sibs." These siblings all hatch together, in the same mud nest, and stay together for their entire lives: living, hunting, and training together. During the war and when in battle, these troops fight together as groups.[9] A troop may lose siblings, and the group may look for "unsibs" — other dragons who have also lost some of their own siblings — to join them.[10] Unsibs who have lost much of their own troop may also look for other unsibs to form a new troop with.[11]

A MudWing troop's first-born dragon is their bigwings; they are the biggest, strongest, and the natural leader of the troop. They serve as a caretaker for the entire troop, taking care of their siblings by helping them to learn and to grow into kind, brave dragons; as well as leading the troop into battles. The bigwings is always the first dragon to hatch in the hatching, and, immediately after they hatch, they help their siblings break out of their own eggs by cracking the shell from the outside.[9][12]

Each troop usually has siblings allocated to different areas or assignments, decided in accordance to their own natural skills and preferences. These assignments include a healer, who studies the use of mud and medicinal herbs for healing; a treasurer, who keeps track of the treasures and provisions shared among the troop; a gatherer, who hunts or forages for additional food alongside what is hunted by the group collectively; and a communicator, who acts as a negotiatior with other troops or asks for help when necessary. A bigwings can also sometimes be in charge of one of these areas, if they are particularly skilled in a specific area.[9][10]
